Visions from nature
Kerguelen part 10
The 2016-2017 field season at Kerguelen Island in the South Indian Ocean didn’t og quite as planned (see previous blog posts). But we’re not giving up, so this spring Phillippe Gaudin from INRA (France) and Xavier Bordeleau from University of Dalhousie/Ocean Tracking Network (Canada) have been training in Norway so that they are well prepared for a second attempt next season. Under normal north-Norwegian conditions we tagged, in early April, 41 sea trouts with external electronic tags which in addition to transmitting the ID unique to each fish, they also transmit information about temperature and salinity in the water. The design in Tosenfjorden (Nordland county) is in many ways identical to what is planned for Kerguelen next winter, and therefore we may compare the marine movements and habitat use of sea trout in the two far-apart regions. Planned departure for Kerguelen is at the start of December 2017.
