Reintroduction of species
One important aspect of ColdGene is that it enables the reconstruction of species gone extinct from Norwegian nature. Propagules and germ cells of many species may be maintained for many generations without being destroyed. Seeds from vascular plants and fragments from mosses may thus be stored over very long time periods and afterwards be successfully reintroduced to their natural environments. However, for most animals and other types of organisms it may be impossible to collect these types of cells and tissue. It may be that new cloning technology in the future can enable reconstruction of individuals based on somatic cells. ColdGene will consist of frozen, immortalized cells from as many species as possible. Future cloning technology may enable the reconstruction and reintroduction of animals gone extinct.
