Då vi på Vitenskapsmuseet gick över till et digitalt röntgensystem stötte vi på flera problem. Våra beprövade standarder fungerade dåligt med den nya tekniken och vi var tvungna att lära om mycket på nytt. Vi såg att det fanns ett behov för kunskapsutbyte och kompetensutveckling på området och beslutade därför att arrangera en workshop för våra kollegor i norden. Arangemanget ägde rum på NTNU Vitenskapsmuseet den 2-3 december 2013.
The conservation laboratory at NTNU Vitenskapsmuseet made the transition to digital x-radiography in late 2012. Using the new technique made us aware that our standards for x-raying artifacts using traditional film were not well suited when using digital image plates. This discovery led us to believe that there was a need among conservators for increased knowledge and an exchange of ideas and experience when it came to digital x-radiography. We decided to organize a workshop for our colleagues in the Nordic countries. The workshop took place on 2nd and 3rd of December 2013.

Under första dagens seminarium fick deltagarna möjlighet att dela med sig av sina erfarenheter med röntgen. Seminariet lade grunden till många intressanta diskussioner. Det vara, överaskande nog, inom den arkeologiska konserveringen man hade störst problem med den digitala metoden, trots att arkeologiska konservatorer använt sig av röntgen i årtionden.
Day 1 of the workshop was organized as a seminar where the participants had the opportunity to share their experiences with x-radiography, both traditional and digital. These presentations led to many interesting discussions. Surprisingly, it was within the field of archaeological conservation, that participants had encountered the most difficulties, this in spite of the fact that the traditional x-ray technique has been used for many years in this field.
Workshopen var välbesökt, totalt 30 deltagare från Sverige, Norge, Finland och Danmark mötte upp i Trondheim. I pauserna tog deltagarna chansen att mingla med både nya och gamla bekanta. Det märktes tydligt att det fanns ett starkt engagemang och diskusinerna från föreläsningssalen fortsatte med full energi bland kaffe och våfflor.
På workshopens andra dag kunde problemställningarna från seminariet omsättas i praktiken.
The workshop had a total of 30 participants, from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. During the intermissions the participants had the chance to meet up with both old and new acquaintances. Everyone seemed very engaged in the topic, and the discussion from the seminar continued over coffee and waffles.
On the second day of the workshop the discussions of day 1 could be given a more practical approach.

Workshopen blev sammantaget mycket lärorik och givande. Röntgen är otvivelaktigt ett nyttigt verktyg för konservatorer, som ser ut att få en än större betydelse framöver. Vi konservatorer har fortfarande mycket att lära både generellt om röntgen och om den nya digitala tekniken. I bloggen hoppas vi kunna fortsätta den goda dialog som uppstod under workshoppen och på så vis lära oss mer om den mångsidiga röntgentekniken.

I Maj i år fick vi ett ypperligt tillfälle att lära oss mer om röntgen då Arkeologisk Museum UiS arrangerade en kurs på temat. En rapport från kursen finns att läsa i nästa blogginlägg.
All in all, the workshop proved both educational and inspiring. X-radiography is without a doubt a useful tool for conservators, and its significance as an analytical tool seems to be gaining now that digital x-radiography is more available.
As conservators we still have a lot to learn about x-raying in general, and digital x-raying specifically. We hope that this blog will aid to continue the productive discussions from the workshop, and contribute to a general increase in knowledge regarding the versatile x-ray technique.

Last May there was an excellent opportunity to learn more about x-radiography when Arkeologisk Museum in Stavanger (UiS) organized a three day course on the topic. You can read about it in the next blog-entry.
